FLEETWOOD MAC
Men Of The World - The Early Years

Sanctuary Midline SMETD-239
http://www.sanctuaryrecordsgroup.co.uk

If you are a hardcore Fleetwood Mac collector, there is little to interest you here as there is nothing previously unissued, all this music having appeared for the first time on disc within the last eight years or so. This three CD box set is divided into 'Some Blues and Roots, Revisited' ( Disc 1), 'Stretching Out, In The Studio' (Disc 2) - the band in their experimental mode - and 'Live' (Disc 3). As the set title indicates, all the tracks date from between 1968 and 1970 - prime Fleetwood Mac in other words, the Peter Green-led, Jeremy Spencer, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and later Danny Kirwan incarnation, still an endless source of fascination for lovers of British blues three and a half decades after its demise. If you are wondering why, this box set offers as good an explanation as any (as well as providing a peep behind the scenes, courtesy of Neil Slaven's customary excellent notes).

Artist: Zac Harmon
Title: The Blues According to Zacariah
Label: Bluestone Records

This is the debut album from a man who has already enjoyed a long and varied career as a studio musician, writer and arranger working with such artists as; Freddie Jackson, Alexander O'neal, Karyn White, Evelyn "Champagne" King and The O'Jays.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, he spent his formative years at his fathers pharmacy on Farish (Farish Street is recognised as the home of many great blues legends such as; Elmore James.) In his younger days he learnt his craft working with and for the likes of Z.Z. Hill, Dorothy Moore Sam Myers and McKinley Mitchell.

The nine tracks (the tenth unlisted track is a wonderful short sweet little guitar gem which subtlety ends the album.) here are a guide and indication of all the skills and influences that Zac has absorbed to date.

This all culminates into being a powerful aural cornucopia of sounds taken from the vast array of emotion filled experiences that are blues/life/blues, styles and shapes formed from years of playing. Pain fuelled pleaders, confident, strident urban blasters to pew pounding gospel. All are here for your delectation.
A fine, fine album, this is only the start for Zac.

Vargas Blues Band
"Love, Union. Peace"
Dro East West 2005.

In this last piece of work 'Love, Union, Peace' the guitar player Javier Vargas has come a little bit more out of blues to make his music closer to other sources such as pop, ballads and some different and much more eclectic 'mestizo' styles but keeping, over all, a very actual powerful strength. I am not saying he does not play some classic rock-blues tunes which follow his usual electrifying line. If you like fireworking guitar players with a variety of pedals and different effects, this cd will not deceive you. And besides Javier has as guest musicians some de luxe artists such as Elliot Murphy, Devon Allman or even Jack Bruce. Cd design and front, back and inner covers have been carefully done and the final production is excellent too. VERY GOOD.

Artist: Brian Blain
Title: Overqualified for the Blues
Label: Northern Blues NMB0011
As Brian Blain approaches his sixtieth birthday, fifteen years since he left his rural home in Quebec to live in Toronto. He has chosen to record a subtle, poignant, affecting album that initially confuses you; for the question here is; is it a folk influenced blues album, or a blues influenced folk album?  Well, I really cannot make up my mind on that particular question, but what I am certain of is; that  what we have here before us is a distillation of life’s experiences and frustrations including friendship, love, landmines, death, adoption and insensitive music executives, all presented with skill, love, care and conviction. A musical tapestry of styles and heartfelt emotions woven together with the aid of;  David Baxter, guitar; Michelle Josef , drums; Victor Bateman, bass; Marc Roy, mandolin, fiddle;   Richard Bell piano; Jim Galloway, soprano and baritone sax; Paul Reddick, harmonica;  Butch Coulter, harmonica; Michael Jerome Browne, harmonica;  12 string guitar;  Rod Phillips, organ; Lily Sazz, Sue Lothrop, Rebecca Campell, Emily Braden, Daisy DeBolt,  Garth Logan, backing vocals, and last but not least Brian Blain, vocals and  guitars.  This ensemble together creates an engaging feeling of warmth and comfort in sound, combined with a questioning stance on some social issues.
An album to relax to and make you think!

Artist: Doug Cox & Sam Hurrie
Title:  Hungry Ghosts
Label: Northern Blues Music NBM0030
This is the first album release from the collaboration between two of Canada’s finest exponents of acoustic roots, rural blues music. Doug Cox who has over the years finely honed his playing skills to become a highly regarded slide and dobro player, who has toured widely displaying his remarkable skills to an ever eager audience. Sam Hurrie spent his early teens listening to all the recorded acoustic pre-war blues he could find; he later went on to join a band named The Churls, who later enjoyed a residency at ‘The Scene ‘club in Toronto, in the sixties, during this time, soon to be legends such as; Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Paul McCartney happily jammed with the band when visiting the city.
In the intervening years to date the two  musicians carried on with their respective careers; until about seven years ago when they started to play occasionally together and  subsequently,  we now  are treated to a uniquely  interesting  and fascinating  meeting of minds who have produced an astonishing  roots album  that is more than the sum of its’ constituent  parts, for we are presented with simply astonishing, soul touching,  riveting  yet  gossamer light acoustic and dobro  dominated  album of songs and instrumentals  that are far more relaxing  and satisfying than floating  in an isolation tank for a fortnight, you can feel throughout the album  the lyrical dexterity of the playing  seeping into your consciousness; of the thirteen stunning  numbers here, five are originals the others  range from the  sublime  “Grinning. In Your Face,” from Son House to the gentle urgency of “Kansas City.”  The time is now right for you to put away all your pills, potions and lie down, listen, float away!

BOOK

Biography:  Jimi Hendrix: 'Room full of Mirrors'
Author:
Charles R. Cross
Publisher:   Sceptre
A sobering  note; from the moment  Jimi  landed in England  with a  seven day visa he unknowingly began his fairytale  ascendancy  from  being  a talented  blues  guitarist to evolve as  the greatest rock guitar  hero, legend  to date;  but, also  it was the four year countdown  to his untimely and tragically shocking  death. "He climbed the mountain conquered it; only to sadly fall off the other side. Leaving us at base camp with a game plan for the next brave talented one!"

This latest biography concerning Jimi Hendrix was featured in August on BBC radio Fours’ book of the week and as a consequence of this programme a great many more people have been made aware of a rare and sadly missed talent, it also displayed the meticulous research carried out over a four year period. (Strangely the same amount of time Jimis’ star was shining at its’ brightest!). The most satisfying aspect of this book is the clear concise, manner in which it is written, consequently making it a thoroughly enjoyable and very informative read; packed with illuminating factual detail.
Whether you are fourteen or sixty-four, Hendrix fan or curious reader! The answers to all your unanswered questions and more!   Are all here in this book for you to discover.
An essential read! An essential reference book!

JOHN ‘BROADWAY’ TUCKER & LESZEK CICHONSKI
Come Together Live!
Omerta.Art OMCD011
www.omerta-art.com   www.bluemovierecords.com   www.cichonski.art.pl

Songs: Messing With The Kid/ Driving Wheel/ Unchain My Heart/ Call My Job/ If You Love Me/ Back To Mississippi/ I Can’t Afford 2/ Just A Little Bit/ Come Together/ Woman I Love

Polish guitarist Leszek Cichonski has already been associated with Chicago guitarists Carlos Johnson and Stan Skibby (see review elsewhere for the latter) and for this set, recorded live in November 2003 at the Free Blues Club in Szczecin, he teams up once again with an American, this time Mississippi-born, Memphis-raised, California-based singer John ‘Broadway’ Tucker, fronting an outfit which also includes the inventive Wojciech Karolak on Hammond organ, David Price on bass and Jim Norris on drums.

John himself may not have achieved much fame or acclaim in the blues world, but he is one of the stalwarts of his local blues scene, the kind of artist who rarely gets picked up by the major labels but who performs an important role within his own community and to the blues in general - so Leszek deserves a lot of credit for this all too rare recording. John’s lived -in, out-of-Mississippi vocals carry the stamp of authenticity - he has warmed up by the old Ray Charles number, ‘Unchain My Heart’ and he audibly grows in stature and confidence as the set progresses. Most of the songs are borrowings, though he avoids the most obvious numbers, and John’s own ‘Back To Mississippi’ is nicely Howling Wolf flavoured whilst his ‘I Can’t Afford 2’ is a fine, slow BB King styled offering.

Leszek is an excellent and generally cliche free guitarist who is certainly in good form here, and the Hammond adds a great depth to the sound. This is a fairly straightforward blues set - the Hendrix infused cover of the Beatles’ title track notwithstanding - and unlike many lesser talents these days, John ‘Broadway’ Tucker can hardly be described as over-recorded (though he has a set on BlueMovie Records and a couple on Messaround), so that although this CD may not set the blues world alight, it is certainly well worth hearing. It sounds as though John had a ball and so will the listener. Norman Darwen

LESZEK CICHONSKI  featuring Stan Skibby
Thanks Jimi - A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix
Tomi TCD 010
www.tomi-cd.com.pl    www.cichonski.art.pl

Songs: Foxy Lady/ Purple Haze/ Voodoo Chile/ Cocaine/ Thanks Jimi/ Fire/ Like A Rolling Stone/ Hey Joe/ Crazy Horse/ Little Wing/ Who Knows

A Hendrix tribute from Poland? Yes, and very impressive it is too. Guitarist Leszek, vocalist and guitarist Stan (who features on all numbers except the title track), bassist Wlodek Krakus and drummer Andrzej Ryszka are obviously and thankfully confident and assured enough not to do things note for note, and this set is totally successful for that very reason; although Chicagoan Stan looks and sounds like Jimi, this is certainly not a ‘Hendrix karaoke’ session!‘Foxy Lady’ has a powerful, sassy vocal contribution from Anika, who also crops up to good effect on ‘Voodoo Chile’ (which is actually the ‘Slight Return’), ‘Thanks Jimi’ is a slow, moody instrumental evoking Jimi’s more mellow side, and the final six titles draw loud applause from a deservedly appreciative audience. It’s good to hear ‘Who Knows’ (‘Band Of Gypsys’ being my favourite Hendrix album), but really, Hendrix lovers just cannot go wrong with this set - in fact, it would be good to hear more in this vein from these guys! OTIS CLAY
In The House - Live At Lucerne Vol. 7

Crosscut ccd 11084

www.crosscut.de

Otis Clay is one of soul’s survivors, still singing in church in Chicago on a Sunday even though he has to look further afield to find an audience for his old-school secular sounds - so, this CD was recorded in November 2003 at the Lucerne Blues Festival. Otis isn’t a blues singer - but his music is the kind of honest-to-goodness, grits ‘n’ groceries soul music that most blues enthiusiasts lap up! That should certainly be the case with this release. Backed by six musicians (including Hollywood Scott on guitar), plus two backing vocalists, collectively known as the Platinum Band, Otis tears up the house, though as with all good things, we have to wait for Clay’s artistry to fully manifest itself.

‘You’re The One’ makes for a poppy opener, though one which allows Otis to exercise his vocal chords; I did expect things to take off with ‘Nickel And A Nail’ but no, it’s a little too fast to be totally successful, so that it is not until Otis wraps his voice around Ronnie Lovejoy’s southern styled ‘Sho Wasn’t Me’ that things really begin to smoulder with this slow-burn, soulful groove. Unfortunately this is then followed by Kris Kristofferson’s standard ‘For The Good Times’ and not even Otis & co can transcend the schmaltz, though to be fair they do try hard. Fortunately this failure is immediately cast aside with ‘I Can Take You To Heaven Tonight’ which finds Otis wailing like a latter-day Sam Cooke, before he and special guest Sharrie Williams transform Lucerne into a storefront church with a spirited (naturally) ‘Amen/ This Little Light Of Mine’. Otis then turns to the funk with Al Green’s ‘Love And Happiness’ which also gives the band a chance to stretch themselves a little, prior to heating things even further with the aptly named ‘I Just Wanna Testify’ and bringing things to a percolating close with the Staples Singers’ ‘Respect Yourself’.

So, this is not an unqualified success though it does capture the feel of anticipation and build-up so integral to a live performance. It certainly proves that real soul music is safe in Otis Clay’s hands. If you didn’t already know that, I would advise you to check this out! Norman Darwen

TERRY EVANS
Fire In The Feeling

Crosscut CCD 11086

www.crosscut.de

Mississippi born singer and guitarist Terry Evans has had a rich and varied career so far, and this CD draws on all its diverse strands: he grew up singing gospel and listening to the blues in secret, wrote for others such as Louis Jordan and Pops Staples after relocating to California, teamed up with Bobby King for a couple of albums and the duo worked regularly with Ry Cooder on his groundbreaking American roots music albums. For this set Evans sings straightahead blues shuffles (try the opener, ‘Uphill Climb (To The Bottom)’, slow blues ballads (‘What About Me?’), gospel wailing soul (Bobby Bland’s ‘Turn On Your Lovelight’), tackles a song that Cooder wrote especially for him (the poignant ‘My Baby Joined The Army’) and even manages to do wonderful approximations of Willie Dixon’s approach on ‘Racket In The Room’ and John Lee Hooker’s later style with ‘Le’s Get Gone’. In contrast, the strutting ‘’I Got A Pony’ veers towards rock and ‘Discover Me’ is lowdown, with some particular dirty sounding trombone - I haven’t really mentioned the musicians, but be assured that their playing is classy throughout. The proceedings end appropriately enough with an unclassifiable ‘Walkin’ Chains’, a slow, atmospheric, seven and a half minutes long opus, part-blues, part worksong, part gospel and part roots - however you want to define it, impressive is a word you cannot avoid!

Most impressively though, Terry keeps things cohesive and fresh-sounding throughout the length of the album. We always knew he’s a very fine singer; this beautifully packaged CD proves that he is a very fine all-round artist. Norman Darwen

MARCIA BALL
LIVE! DOWN THE ROAD
Alligator ALCD 4903

SONGS: Big Shot; The Right Tool For The Job; Just Kiss Me; That’s Enough Of That Stuff; Louella; Every Day Will Be Like a Holiday; La Ti Da; It Hurts To Be In Love; Down The Road; No Ordinary Woman; Crawfishin’; Louisiana 1927; Count The Days; Let Me Play With Your Poodle

The dynamic Marcia Ball is a powerful force to listen to, especially since this album is her first live recorded performance in over a 30-year recording and touring career. Her talents of singing, piano playing, and song-writing are even more vibrant before a live audience. Her unique repertoire includes a blend of Coast Gulf Music that includes New Orleans R&B, Texas swing blues, South Louisiana swamp pop, roots rock ‘n’roll, and ballads. Her awesome two-fisted piano playing is inspired by Professor Longhair, and her strong, clear vocals are influenced by Irma Thomas.

Marcia performs songs which span her career. Songs like “La Ti Da” and “Crawfishin’” are some of her classics. She has a boundless, rollicking energy that is infectious. She opens all the stops with her spicy, hot song “That’s Enough Of That Stuff,” and plays an incredibly fast version of the longest track on the album, “ Let Me Play With Your Poodle.” She slows down on a few songs, like the sensual “Just Kiss Me” and the sad, soulful ballad about a flood in “Louisiana 1927.” That song even has more emotional impact since the devas tating hurricane in New Orleans. She puts her all in every song. She wrote seven of the fourteen songs.

Her red-hot road band is augmented by extra horns, organ, and guest artist, Angela Strehli, who sings a duet with Marcia on “It Hurts To Be In Love.” Some of the band members, particularly Pat Boyack on guitar and Brad Andrew on tenor sax, play some impressive, lengthly solos.

Check out this CD and watch for a DVD recording of the show on PBS television, and possible purchase. This show and other performances were taped in The Big Room of the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, California as part of the Sierra Center Stage Series. Live recordings often bring out the best in performers and this CD is no exception. Marcia Ball has some unique talents. She could give Little Richard some competition. Marcia is an exciting and entertaining musician. Her music can have you up and dancing or just spellbound about her piano playing.

WAYDOWN
Greek Street
Vicksboro’ VBCD003
www.shakeyvick.com

Released officially at the beginning of October

Waydown are a London-based five piece previously known as Maxwell Street and this project has only taken forty years to come to fruition! As harpman and vocalist Shakey Vick (Graham Vickery) explains on the sleeve, in the early sixties he had recorded a tape with vocalist and guitarist Chris Youlden (later of Savoy Brown fame), and also one with drummer Mel Wright. Both these tapes are now lost; so Maxwell Street came together with the aim of recreating those glory days. Waydown’s line-up is completed by lead guitarist Bernie Pallo - the newcomer who has only been associated with Shakey since the early seventies - and bassist Andy Cleveland, with veteran Pete Moody filling in on bass on four tracks. Shakey wrote all the songs bar one, and he and Chris alternate vocals, with Bernie having an instrumental showcase with his own ‘Bernie’s Bounce’. The title comes from the name of the London street “in which we were most often drunk”, so Shakey tells us!

What else do you need to know - what’s the music like? Come on! These guys have been around for years and have centuries of experience between them. This is Chicago styled, for the most part - think Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Reed, Billy Boy Arnold, Howling Wolf especially - and John Lee Hooker is most certainly in there, but all performed with that early sixties British rawness and enthusiasm, though tempered with a musicianship refined over forty years.

In short, if you have any interest in the UK blues scene of the last half-century, this is for you. Norman Darwen

John NICHOLAS
Thrill On The Hill
TopCat 2005

An impressing reissue that originally was recorded in 1994 for Antones. Performed by one of the historical white Texas blues names, that is to say, the one and only Mr. Johnny Nicholas who along the years has recorded with such legendary names like Walter Horton, Johnny Shines or Snooky Pryor. The cd has been now recovered for the pleasure of blues lovers and fans. You will find John Nicholas together with Jack Barber on bass, C.C. Pinkston on drums, Floyd Domini and Ernie Bowser sharing piano and Nicholas himself playing guitar, mandolin, harmonica, keyboards and vocals too. Genuine, original and powerful blues that deeply reminds fifties Chess recording sessions sound. Four amazing bonus tracks complete the legacy of eleven excellent personal songs recorded by one of my favourite blues celebrities, Mr. Johnny Nicholas, ESSENTIAL. VICENTE P. ZÚMEL

The Hollywood Blue Flames
Soul Sanctuary
Delta Groove 2005

If the previous cd was great, this one is delightful and contributes to perpetuate the memory of the always missed Hollywood Fats Band. The Blue Flames are the new version of the Hollywood Fats with young guitar player Kirk Fletcher instead of sadly disappeared Michael ‘Fats’ Mann. The rest of the original band musicians went to the studios to record this amazing cd. You will find Al Blake, as band leader and catalyst, on vocal and guitar playing, the great Richard Innes on drums, the unpayable Fred Kaplan on piano, the irreplaceable Larry Taylor on double bass and Kirk Fletcher himself on guitar, plus Kim Wilson as guest musician on harp. As you can easily imagine all these musicians playing together have done an unforgettable cool full of magic but at the same time very passionate and with a great feeling cd, where real blues is totally present along the thirteen precious treasures included on this powerful, hard, original faultless cd. ESSENTIAL. VICENTE P. ZÚMEL

Geneva Red & The Roadsters
Gettin’ Cocky
Bottle Cap 2005.

Lou is a singer and guitar player deeply influenced by artists like Jeff Beck, Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton, but I think specially by Robben Ford and Mike Bloomfield. The cd gathers ten good songs that combine with a very gratifying and elegant style original rockin’-blues with funk and r&b flavour. All songs have been gracefully conceived with very well worked arrangements that although sometimes get off from the usual twelve bars there are always tastefully and skillfully done. If you are interested on intelligent and elegant well designed blues, you will certainly love this cd. VERY GOOD. VICENTE P. ZÚMEL
