Continue to support your local blues clubs, the Sacramento Blues Society and festivals in the area, AND remember to 'BOOGIE' responsibly ...always, save me a seat! Willie Katrina Relief (Torch Club Style)!! In light of the recent devastation inflicted all along the gulf coast, and the continuing and growing need of assistance and resources for the relief effort, it is readily understood that everyone is doing what they can, with what they have. Down at the Torch Club, we are no different. We do try to temper such physical and emotional hardships and gut-checks with friends, good conversation, great music and the occasional cocktail. We do what we can, with what we have... and what we have is booze and blues. So last week we decided to begin purveying what we felt was a fitting (albeit a little wry) libation to aid in the relief efforts: A libation created and made famous on the corner of St. Peter and Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans at a legendary restaurant named Pat O'Briens. Thats Right. We're mixing "Hurricanes" for Hurricane Relief! ...and every cent of every Hurricane we sell is being donated to the relief efforts. At six bucks a pop we've managed to raise several hundred dollars so far... and we're not stopping. Some of our distributors have kicked in an extra case of rum and some hurricane glasses so we are going to keep this thing going for the rest of the month. So if you're the type that enjoys the occasional cocktail, or if you were going to have one anyway, head over to the Torch Club, 904 15th Street, between I & J, and have a Hurricane or two [every few days] (we can't condone having more than two, drink responsibly people!). There is always live entertainment seven nights a week, as well as live happy hour (5pm-7pm) - entertainment Wednesday through Sunday, to help the Hurricanes go down easier (you can find performance schedules on SacBlues web or at the Torch's web site below). Thanks again, Marina, James, Donnie, Moose, Jimmy & the Torch Club. |

BLIND PIG TO RELEASE TWO DVDs Blind Pig Records has announced that it will release full-length DVDs on October 25, 2005 from two of the most popular acts in the blues field - Tommy Castro and Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers. Both videos were shot in March of 2005 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California. Blind Pig produced the shows in conjunction with HDNet, the high definition cable TV network, which will begin airing the programs this month (see starting airdates below). The Tommy Castro DVD, which is entitled Whole Lotta Soul (BPDVD6005) features Castro and his electrifying band soaring through a riveting set of their unique rock 'n' soul music. Performing mostly material from their latest best-selling CD, Soul Shaker, which has been on the Billboard Blues Chart for over 18 weeks, the band demonstrates why their exhilarating live shows have captivated and won legions of dedicated fans. Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers' video is entitled Big Blues Party (BPDVD6004) and clearly shows why this group is a three-time winner of the W.C. Handy "Best Blues Band" Award. Their power-packed performances showcase Rod's searing harmonica, impassioned vocals, and impeccable showmanship, punctuated by the two-fisted piano of Honey Piazza and one of the most entertaining, tightly-knit blues bands on the scene. Both Blind Pig DVD titles feature over 60 minutes of performance footage, 5.1 Surround Sound, and interviews with the artists. HDNet has announced that the Tommy Castro and Rod Piazza shows (which they've entitled Blues At The Brewery) will first be broadcast this month as part of their Sunday Night Concert Series. Rod Piazza's performance will air on Sunday, September 11th, while the Castro show will be broadcast on September 18th. |

![]() ![]() Thank you to: Tano Ro FEELIN' GOOD PRODUCTIONS Via Bancalari 10/a 16043 Chiavari GE Italy |
Dear Fans and Friends.
We just returned from a 2 month tour of Europe a little over a week ago. Our tour dates took us to towns and cities in France, Belgium, Luxembourg ,Switzerland ,Spain, Poland and Italy. I've toured to Europe for almost 30 years. But I want to say how gratified I was to the European people for their warm and gracious reception. To do a tour anywhere of any magnitude is a major undertaking. I want to take this opportunity to thank Tano Ro of Feelin' Good Productions for the hard work that he did to book and then manage the tour. Tano has been a good friend and ally in my Euro tours for 25 years now. He loves the Blues and has been a tireless advocate in my behalf. Without his labors this tour wouldn't have been as smooth as it was. The logistics of getting in and out of different countries, cities, airports and venues can be a daunting task for anyone. I want to thank the band for hangin' in there through thick and thin. Night after night we played the blues as best as we can. For every individual audience a fresh face and attitude has to be combined to make that show " the best " of the tour. Because every audience deserves the best that can be offered. Often times in the past I have worked with European musicians, who alsolove the blues. But this tour I wanted to bringmy U.S.musicians who tour all over the United States and Canada with me. We tour almost 11mos. a year all over North America. My guitarist; Randall Dubis,is a Milwaukee, Wi. native who has called Denver,Co. his home for over 25 years. Our drummer; David Lee "Stix" Boyette, was born in New Orleans, La.,but wasraised in Oakland , Ca. Thesegentlemen nightly gave the European Blues fans a taste of the blues that they won't soon forget. For this tour we had a special guest from Boston,Massachusetts; Brian Templeton. He is a formidable talent on harmonica and a killer vocalist also. His ex-band , The Radio Kings opened a show I did in the East in the early 90's. Please keep an eye out for him. Our bassist from the U.S. was unable to do this tour. So we were ably assisted by three Italian musicians during the course of the tour. Luca Tonani of Milano, Ruben Minuto of Milano and Luca Zulian of Padova filled in on the bass during the run of the tour. Our tour was a succession of 'high points'. It is unfair and nearly impossible to say what show was best. Every show is special and hasvalue. One of the shows we did was in Agrigento,Sicilia. the backdrop to the stage was a large hill that featured 3,000 year old Greek ruins . It is an awesome feeling to perform in such a beautiful setting. We did a Festival in Bellinzona, Switzerland that was framed by the Swiss Alps. You do not forgethese scenes easily. We are now making ready to leave Florida and head to Iowa, Idaho and then Alberta, Canada. The balance of our 2005 tour will take us from East to West and back again. I am a self described 'Disciple of the Blues' and a Road Warrior. Blues fans every where make it possible for us to 'keep on keepin on'. Thank you for over 30 years of your love and support. The tank is full, the van's idling and ready to go. I'll see you' out there'. With love and affection, Sonny Rhodes |

Born in the Delta town of Harmontown, he worked most of his life as a sharecropper and fisherman, only taking up music professionally when he was 65. After signing to Fat Possum records in 1991, he recorded a dozen albums and toured worldwide. Burnside had been in declining health since heart surgery in 1999.On September 16, 2005, blues legend B.B. King will celebrate his 80th birthday, and Backbeat Books will mark this milestone with the publication of B.B King: There Is Always One More Time. The Sacramento Blues Society has received an offer of a 20% discount on this book about B.B. King: There Is Always One More Time. You can still order the book for $14.36 via the link at the bottom. W.C. HANDY AWARD WINNER - BLUESMAN, OTIS TAYLOR THE SACRAMENTO BLUES SOCIETY'S 26TH ANNIVERSARY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE Sacramento, Calif. DATE: Sunday, September 25, 2005 - 2PM to 6PM. LOCATION: Clarion Hotel Blue Room Lounge - 2600 Auburn Blvd. Sacramento - Corner of Auburn & Fulton (off Capital City Freeway Bus. 80). COVER CHARGE: $10 FOR SBS MEMBERS/$15 FOR NON-MEMBERS/KIDS UNDER 12 FREE - All ages welcome! Opening: Larry Davis & Groove Drop! WHO IS OTIS TAYLOR? Otis Mark Taylor was born in Chicago in 1948, but in the early 1950s the Taylor family moved to Denver Colorado. One of young Otis' favorite neighborhood hang-outs was the Denver Folklore Center. He bought his first instrument there, a used ukulele. A banjo and harmonica soon joined the collection. He started his first group the "Butterscotch Fire Department Blues Band" in 1964. In 1977 Taylor retired from the music business, and for the next two decades ran a successful antiques dealership in Colorado. Taylor often jammed with friends and family, but did not perform in public. After years of prodding from his musical mentor Kenny Pasarelli, Taylor finally returned to performing in 1995. In 2002 Otis Taylor's White African earned four W.C. Handy nominations and was awarded "Best New Artist Debut"! In 2003 Taylor garnered two more W.C. Handy nominations, one for "Contemporary Blues Album" and one for "Best Acoustic Artist" for his recording Respect the Dead. Otis Taylor is an instructor for the Blues In The Schools - "Writing the Blues" and "Art Enrichment Program" series. He and his band are currently touring in support of the new CD Below the Fold. His smoky vocals evoke a mysterious and primal world of blues trance. Otis Taylor Web Site: Opening the show will be Sacramento's own Larry Davis & Groove Drop! This band is truly a family friendly group, along with Larry on keyboards, saxaphone & vocals, his wife Allie and daughter Cicely handle lead vocals with Eric Barton on guitar, Zach Sharpe on bass and Al Agpoon on drums. They perform great blue with intricate vocal harmonies, R&B and funk. About the Sacramento Blues Society The Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) is a 501 ( c ) 3 nonprofit organization formed to preserve and promote blues music as an art form. http://www.sacblues.com/ We are one of the oldest blues societies in California founded 1979. The SBS has kept the blues tradition alive in the Sacramento area by promoting the local blues music scene, bringing international renowned artists to the region, and providing educational opportunities for young people with our “Blues In The Schools” program. |

![]() 9/2/2005: Sad news. R.L. Burnside has died yesterday at a hospital in Memphis at the age of 78. He and his music will be greatly missed. R.L. Burnside was one of the greatest blues singer and guitarist of our time. R.L. lived near Holly Springs, Mississippi and has been performing since the 1950s, although he didn't garner much recognition until recording for Fat Possum Records in the 1990's. His last recording -2004- was the great document "A Bothered Mind". With his label, R.L. produced some of the most unique and fascinating blues out there. |
