NEWS"pin" BLUES

by Fritz Svacina

Blues Revue calls West Coast blues guitarist Rusty Zinn "A young guitar player with great talent and a wealth of experience. Impeccable, emotional playing with biting licks and a natural sense of swing" and Down Beat says "Zinn's sharp and assertive guitar work is one of the under sung pleasures of the current blues scene." Rusty's 2000 Alligator release, THE CHILL, features his forceful, tasteful, fat-toned guitar playing and R&B-inflected vocals on heart-pounding originals, four co-written by Little Charlie and the Nightcats' Rick Estrin, and a vibrant mix of obscure blues songs. Also features a guest appearance by Elvin Bishop.

THE SLIDE ZONE
A Special Letter to Our Slide Zone Friends, Family and Fans....from Gaynell Rogers

Hello Everyone....
So much is happening in the 'Slide Zone', we thought we'd send out a newsletter and update you all on a few things...

Touring News!

For the first time in years, Roy Rogers and The Delta Rhythm Kings are touring the South East and North East this month. The dates are posted on the website (www.roy-rogers.com) and we are hitting Atlanta, Charlotte, Norfolk and Arlington Virginia as well as Ohio and New York. Please let your friends and family know and support live music out there on the road...in these troubled times we can use all the help we can get! Also the band is going over to Lucerne, Switzerland in November for a festival. Fun times!

Benefit for Drummer Billy Lewis

Our drummer Billy Lewis was diagnosed with cancer this last summer, and with a new wife and baby this has been very rough. He has lost a summer and fall of income.
We are lucky to have Mike Hyman from Louisville, Kentucky working with us this fall. Mike was in the band in the early 90's and a great musician. You can find more information on him on the website under Band Info.
On Dec. 5th we will be hosting a benefit for Billy and his family here in San Francisco at Slim's and it will be an all star cast of characters you can be sure! Roy Rogers and The Delta Rhythm Kings and the Tommy Castro Band will be the co-bill with some very special guests. So stay tuned on the website for more news on how you can contribute and participate.

Fundraising for Hurricane Relief and the New Orleans Musicians Clinic

As most of you know I was born in New Orleans, and these past few weeks have been very difficult, sad - but motivating. None of my family is there, however we have many close friends and an extended musical family there and in Mississippi. This disaster will be with us for years to come. But time to do all that we can for the recovery of this great region of our country that is filled with a bounty of amazing musicians, history and art. As a lot of you know Roy and I have been going to New Orleans for years and even spent our honeymoon there. We?ve just always felt that it was such a special place in America?s culture. So now it's time to get in to gear...

We have chosen to fundraise for The New Orleans Musicians Clinic which is running out of Lafayette, LA in exile. Please see their plea below. It is a moving and very worthy organization that does great work for this special community of musicians. They need all the help they can get - and not just now - but for months to come.

National Distribution of Live!

We are please to announce the national distribution of Live! At the Big Room from The Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Please tell your friends to go to Tower Records, Virgin and major retailers to get their very own copy of the recording!

We send our best and are so grateful to all of you for your continuing support ~

THE NEW ORLEANS MUSICIANS CLINIC-IN-EXILE
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana
September 8, 2005

When the New Orleans' Musicians Clinic was founded in 1998 we had a simple mission- To sustain our musicians in mind, body and soul. (www.wwoz.org/clinic) At the time our founder, Dr. Jack McConnell (founder of Volunteers in Medicine, and creator of incapsulated Tylenol) got the committment from the LSU Medical School dean by asking, "It's not if you can afford to care for musicians, it is if you can afford not to." And now our dedicated staff feel that the very soul of our culture is in jeapordy and we are doing all we can to keep the music alive.

Last evening 150 New Orleans musicians came together at Grant Street, one of Lafayette's (2 1/2 hours sw of New Orleans in the heart of the Cajun country) famed music clubs. In a culture where even our funerals have dancing and music, silence is a bleak testiment to the loss of soul. The absence of instruments seemed to add a note of desperation as musicians tenatively walked into the unfamiliar club. Their solemn faces reflected uncertainty and despair. Brittany Kite, the second generation proprieter of the club, had opened her heart to New Orleans displaced musicians and to the newly arrived staff of the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. It was a simple gesture of kindness, a heartfelt welcome.

There was no agenda, no fanfare. Just a place to see familiar faces and an open mike. Michelle Gegenheimer, NOMC Administrative Director, spoke of her own displacement from home, family and community. Then she pledged her determination to protect and serve the musicians of New Orleans. To continue the familiar comfort the clinic has always provided. She praised the outpouring of support from the NOMC's sister clinic, Healthcare for Musicians ( H4M), especially SWALHEC, and the leadership of Jeanne Solis and Tanya James.

Kathy Richard, Administrative Director of H4M, embraced the musicians with her genuine Cajun openess and compassion, " You are our family and we welcome you into our home. It is our great privilege to have you enrich our community with your presence."

Robert Guercio and Mike Delcambre of 307 Downtown ( formerly 307 Jazz and Blues) shared what they had set up... Another simple act of thoughtfulness. They handed out flyers of all the local clubs who would both host regular open houses for musicians so they would have a place to hangout, and they had organized a roster of clubs who were adding extra gigs so musicians could begin performing again.

Word got out that Wendy Oxenhorn of the Jazz Foundation of America had secured instruments for the musicians. That Kathy Richard had secured a warehouse in Lafayette to store the instruments and even had a security guard who would stand guard. Other groups were seeking laptops, cd players, clothing gift certificates.

Rick Roth, a longtime NOMC donor, at Mirror Image in Pawtucket, R.I. had gotten Hanes to donate 5000 shirts. His fair trade tee shirt factory was printing the crescent symbol of the city with the slogan-bent not broken. 200 shirts would soon be arriving in Lafayette for NOMC staffers and musicians. They will also be sold by several national record chains.

Scott Aiges, Music Commissioner of New Orleans, would soon have a news portal up and running nomusiciansrelief.net.

Noted Cajun musicians Micheal Doucet (Beausoliel) and Zachary Richard gently moved through the crowd, hugging their comrades, promising their support. Doucet has volunteered to produce the H4M fundraising street dance next week. Richard is helping to organize paid gigs for musicians in the schools and shelters.

There were a lot of embraces, tears and then by the end of the evening Kathy Richard noticed that the men were standing taller and were smiling. As she told me, " I believe our first goal had been accomplished- we had established a sense of community, trust and hope for New Orleans' musicians!"

For the past week telecommunications have been daunting in the gulf south. Most of us NOMC-ers finally had to turn off the TV and we had to turn off our tears. Many of you who know me recall that I wrote the book REDNECK HEAVEN in which I learned a lot of redneck wisdom. There is that phrase-"there are two kinds of people in the world- seemers and be-ers." All of us strive to accomplish what we can put our arms around.

Now we move on to our second daunting goal- at Grant Street each musician filled out a Needs Assessment/contact information form. Kathy Richard and Michelle Gegenheimer are currently setting in motion a plan to satisfy the most immediate needs of each musician.

Marsha Broussard, the director of the Rural Health Iniative, has volunteered to be the Executive Director for the NOMC-in -Exile and to assist in fascilitating the goals of the coalition of those working to provide services for our musicians.

Johann Bultman, Chairman of the NOMC remains in New Orleans where his immediate goal is to return to the NOMC/DOC clinic as soon as the water goes down to retrieve vital records and to begin rebuikding the actual clinic site.

He is also insuring that all donations we receive will be appropriately processed, acknowledged, and spent effectively. Many of you know that the NOMC has a formula for aid-- for every $1 we raise we provide $12 worth of services. We strive to weave together existing services and rally donated services and goods whenever possible.

Bethany (me), the NOMC Outreach Chair, struggles with spotty telecommunications in Natchez, Mississippi. I am conducting fundraising and serving as laison with the NOMC staff in Lafayette.

Each of us from New Orleans faces uncertainity, each of us shares the determination to sustain our beloved culture. And each of us is committed to this mission for the long hall. We not only will settle the musicians and their families in the Lafayette community, but we will resettle them in New Orleans.

That said, we are still have no access to our NOMC bank accounts so we must start from scratch raising money: This fund goes directly to sustain our NOMC-in-Exile operations until January 2006 and to provide direct assistance to musicians ( from purchasing gasoline to school uniforms for their children and everything in between.)

There is a second fund ( simulatenously) which we are in the process of establishing: As soon as possible we want to begin paying musicians to perform in the schools and shelters throughout La.. At the moment I can not provide firm details, but I can assure you that by Monday, September 12 we will have a firm system in place.

In closing, I want to provide some information about us which you can share with others who may want to join our iniative:

The New Orleans Musicians' Clinic (NOMC) is an innovative not-for-profit occupational medicine and wellness partnership offering comprehensive health care to our community's most precious resource: our musicians. Our sponsors are the Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, and the LSU Health Care Network. Dedicated on May 2, 1998, NOMC became the first such health initiative in the United States, addressing the health care needs of musicians and their families, an under-served segment of the population. To date our dedicated consortium of service providers has treated more than 1000 local musicians.

Our Lafayette iniative is not limited to our prior NOMC patients. It is open to all New Orleans musicians and their families. We are blessed that our partners at SWALHEC and H4M already had a wonderful health care system in place to serve musicians ( utilize both FQHC clinics and the LSU residency program at UMC). Catherine Lasparges, NOMC nurse practioner, has relocated to Lafayette. A home health agency has offered her all monitoring equipment so that she can monitor and triage all New Orleans musicians into the well estbalished health system in the Acadian region of southwest Louisiana.

As you know, New Orleans music transcends all cultural barriers. Not only do we strive to affect an agenda of wellness in our musician patient population, we encourage our musicians to become advocates for early detection, prevention, and treatment for others facing the same catastrophic risks. Our hometown musicians travel the world, making them the coolest people in their neighborhoods. By targeting a group of thought leaders and cultural icons, we hope to influence a larger portion of society and begin to influence the healthcare seeking patterns of our population at large.

In July 2002, the NOMC was able to secure funding from the LSU Biomedical Research Fund through the generous support of Pfizer Inc and Pfizer Foundation for $100,000 over two years to Improve Healthcare Access and Outcomes in the New Orleans' music community. Ironically it was with this money that we helped create our sister clinic in Lafayette, which has now welcomed its arms to us.

Just prior to Katrina we had received word of a Wisner Grant from Mayor Nagin to assist us in implementing a Diabetes Maintence Group for musicians. As soon as we can get on his radar we will ask him to redirect the funds into our Lafayette iniative so that we can secure diabetes care for all our musicians in need-- diet, medical evaluations, medications.

We appreciate your advice, your prayers and your support to aid us in keeping the music alive in Louisiana!

Bethany Bultman
NOMC Co-Founder and Outreach Chair

Tour Dates
The Derek Trucks Band will be returning to the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta for another New Year's Eve run Dec 30 & 31!  These two nights will be extra special with the addition of Susan Tedeschi, bringing her own band to co-bill these two shows!!!  Tickets go on sale Today through DTB ticketing.  Go to the tourpage of the site for the link.
Also a part of the holiday run will be a show in Charlotte at the McGlohon Theatre.  Tickets are on sale now for this event. The DTB has finished a new album!!  The album was recorded in Nashville over the summer and will be released in early February of next year.  This is truly a "band" record with no guest musicians except longtime DTB collaborator Count M'Butu on percussion. The band really pushed the envelope on this recording and everyone is eager for the fans to give it a listen.
More info soon on pre-sales, release date, etc!!
More dates have been added in Nov and Dec, as well as new dates in January.
There will be a pre-sale for the Danbury, CT show starting Today. Also, a tour of the west coast is scheduled for Feb so keep your eyes open for those dates soon.

HANS THEESSINK - News

TERRY EVANS BAND & HANS THEESSINK    Two Hearts - One Soul!
FREITAG 21.OKTOBER     WIEN /  PLANET MUSIC  20:00

TICKET-INFORMATION: http://www.planet.tt

PAUL PENA: 1950 - 2005
Photo:©Peter Pena
We're sad to report that Paul passed away Saturday October 1, 2005 in the early evening at his apartment in San Francisco. He'd been through a long battle with Pancreatitis and Diabetes. This is a huge loss for all of us.

During the past eight years, Paul's health has been on the decline and his quality of life was greatly diminished by the nearly constant state of pain that he was in. We can take comfort in knowing that he's no longer suffering.

There are plans for a memorial concert in the works and we'll post the details here when they've been solidified.

Friends: email your condolences to the Pena family.

Artist News from Crows Feet Productions

Brian Blain
On October 4, NorthernBlues Music released Brian Blain’s latest CD, Overqualified for the Blues.

Brian Blain is the quintessential 21st century northern bluesman - a study in contradiction. His guitar style is as authentic and soulful, as you will find in any blues - south, east, west or north - while his lyrics reveal a unique contemporary point of view. His vocals do not sound like some old blues guy, yet he is an old blues guy, with 60 years of life experiences and 40 years writing and singing about them (on the same Epihone guitar). His lyrics are thoughtful but he is an entertainer at heart.

Special guests on the CD include Harry Manx, Paul Reddick, Richard Bell, Butch Coulter, Jim Galloway, Michael Fonfara, Michael Jerome Browne and Michelle Josef.

You can find out more about Brian at http://www.brianblain.ca and the CD at http://www.northernblues.com.

David Jacobs-Strain
Blues/roots/Americana guitar virtuoso, David Jacobs-Strain performed on the nationally syndicated Woodsongs Radio Hour last week. You can watch the performance at http://webcast.msc.uky.edu/woodsongs-369.wmv and the audio archive will be available shortly.

You can find out more about David at http://www.davidjacobs-strain.com.

Mojo Stu
Mojo Stu is performing at The Greater Philadelphia Rock, Rhythm and Blues Fest on Friday, October 7 at 7 p.m. Other performers include Shemekia Copeland, Otis Taylor, and the Campbell Brothers. For more information about the festival and the performers visit http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=981.

Michael Powers
W.C. Handy nominee, Michael Powers, will be in the South the third week of October to perform at the Promise of the Blues on October 20, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at Bologna Performing Arts Center, Cleveland, MS, http://www.bolognapac.com/SeasonLineUp.htm. Michael will be appearing with Big Bill Morganfield and 2005 IBC "Best Unsigned Blues Band," Diunna Greenleaf and the Blue Mercy Band.

While in the South, Michael will also be performing at:
10-22 – Soul Stew with Brett Fleming, WEVL, Memphis
10-23 – Huey’s Midtown, Memphis
10-24 – Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar, Nashville
10-27 – Thacker Mountain Radio Show, Oxford, MS
10-28 – Sassy Ann’s, Knoxville

Beardo recently had this to say about Michael in a review of the Poconos Blues Festival on BluesWax (www.blueswax.com):
"… We eschewed the long buffet line to get ringside for sensational Michael Powers and his band to witness one of the most complete guitar players on the scene in years. As the multitude got situated, Powers opened the 14th Poconos Blues Festival (and quite a few eyes) with a resounding set of electric blues, and to my delight his excellent cover of Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction." To close the set, Powers and band performed their newest, soon-to-be-released single, "(Taking Off Her) Rock and Roll Sweater." Consequently, one of the longest lines for autographed CDs then commenced as, "Where the hell has this guy been?" was the theme of the conversation."

You can find out more about Michael at www.michaelpowersfrequency.com.

GAIL MULDROW & The Funkybabeone

LYNWOOD SLIM a.k.a. Richard Duran
Lynwood Slim felt there were only two things he could do to make a living: shoot   a pool or play harmonica. Thank goodness he chose to be a musician. As a child he played trumpet, but at 15 he picked up the harmonica. Although drawn to listening to Jimmy

Reed and Little Walter, he made the career choice after watching Brooklyn Slim and Paul Oscher. His early memorable gigs allowed him to sit in with Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and others. When the southern California scene dried up in the mid-'70s, he packed up and moved to Minneapolis.often with Leonard "Baby Doo" Caston, James Smith and Walter Horton. His style of swing blues won him numerous awards bestowed by the Minnesota Music Academy, and he documented musical triumphs with Lost in America, releasedin 1990; and Soul Feet, released in 1991 and reissued five yearslater.Slim briefly returned to Los Angeles, where joined Dave Specter and moved to Chicago in 1995. Several years later, family circumstances and the reblossoming of the southern California scene returned Slim home. Besides his presence gracing the live L.A.  scene, Slim and producer Jerry Hall have produced European and American artists over the years. In 1998, they set up their own record label, Pacific Blue Recording Company; World Wide Wood followed in 2000.
Disponibile dal 6 al 19 Febbraio 2006

SONNY RHODES: The Texas Blues Legend

BRIAN TEMPLETON
“Brian Templeton is one of the most talented vocalists to come along in quite a while. His combination of power and conviction along with unerring pitch and a swinging and flexible sense of time makes his delivery truly stand out, and his dynamic stage presence makes him a "must see" live.” Jerry Portnoy-Harmonica Master 8 years with Muddy Waters . Founder and recently recorded (From the Cradle) and performed worldwide as a member of Eric Clapton’s Blues Band

“The depth and intensity apparent in Templeton’s vocals are not the qualities of a mere imitator. His voice has a beefed-up, muscular character that’s grown immensely since the bands early days.” Art Tipaldi-Blues Revue Magazine “The center of attention is singer Brian Templeton, who proves that showmanship needn’t compromise soulful expression. His big barrel-chested baritone and complementary harmonica allow him to cover old tunes with unusual ease and authority. Templeton never sounds as if he’s reaching beyond his grasp. In short, he knows what he’s doing.” Mike Joyce-The Washington Post

“Templeton sings as full as a prairie sunset. His voice is extremely expressive, with a heavy, tarnished quality tailored for blues” Marc Levy-The Boston Phoenix

“Templeton delivers song that belies a Bay State upbringing. The listener suspects he spent time around Chicago or Austin, Texas.” Scott McLennan-Telegram & Gazette

“The best front-man in Boston.” Greg Sarni- Pres. Blues Trust Productions and promoter of the Boston Blues Festival

“Brian Templeton loves to sing the blues live. And it shows!” Marie Lingblom- The Woburn Advocate.

The Boston Best Blues front men”.
