| Aquaphonics with Banjo Picker Billy Gilmore (The Hobex show has been cancelled) THU. 05.11.2006 · 09:00PM · FREE The improvizational styles of Aquaphonics range from pure funk, to post-bop era freeform jazz and fusion, and African and Latin rhythms. Their songs are written around a basic two- or three-part format, with sections of free jams intertwined within... all of which will get you groovin'. Psychedelic Funk-Rock by Brother Bean FRI. 05.12.2006 · 09:30PM · $12 Brother Bean's live shows are full of energy, fun songs and good old-fashioned psychedelia. Drawing from many different influences, they blend them together to create a fresh original sound all their own. One recent review said, "Creating a blend of funk, blues, jazz and good old rock and roll, Brother Bean shows have become known for their mix of well written original material, soaring improvisational sections and fantastic covers." Funk and Soul of Hagus Magagus SAT. 05.13.2006 · 09:30PM · $12 Hagus Magagus is like a musical Frankenstein of funk, rock, hip-hop and jazz. Describing their show, City Link wrote, "The band hopped from funk-rock Chili Peppers territory to washed-out psychedelia, with (bassist Brian) Lang's Frank Zappa-meets-Les Claypool voice spouting rapid fire lyrics over it all." The trio has toured Europe and opened for Steel Pulse, The Meters and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe.

NEW RELEASE

THE HOODOO MAN RELEASES NEW ALBUM May 1, 2006 (New Orleans, LA) -- Jesse Moore, a blues singer, songwriter and guitarist from New Orleans, LA, has released his brand new album "More Than Life Itself". The CD contains 11 tracks of rootsy blues and R&B, produced by Grammy Award winning New Orleans legend Anders Osborne. Picked by The Times-Picayune as one of the 'Top 10 New Orleans CDs of the Year', "More Than Life Itself" features some of the top names on New Orleans music scene. This journey of the heart and soul was the first CD released by any Louisiana artist after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Crescent City. "Enduring talent cannot be faked, especially for singer-songwriters baring their wailing souls. Jesse Moore is no faker," Wavy Davy of Chronogram Magazine writes. Described as 'the consummate entertainer' and 'a joy with a beautiful, unique, soulful voice' by Gambit Weekly of New Orleans, Jesse Moore honed his craft in the honkytonks and bars of his home in New Orleans, and on stages from San Francisco to Singapore and Berlin to Bali. The Hoodoo Man - another moniker Jesse is known by - kicked off his musical journey at the age of 12 as a staff 'demo singer' in the famed Brill Building in New York, pumping out songs written by many of the songwriting titans of the time: Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and Carol King to name just a few. A year later, he won the famed Apollo Theater Talent Night Contest. "I auditioned for Motown Records in Smokey Robinson's dressing room between shows at the Apollo with the original Temptations and Marvin Gaye looking on," Jesse remembers. "Smokey said 'Sorry kid, you sound too much like me.', but what an experience!" Soon, Jesse wound up in the land of the rising sun, Tokyo to be exact, where he joined nine other Americans performing as The Houserockers, an R&B combo that released five albums on Japan's RCA Victor, touring extensively throughout Japan and Southeast Asia. Upon returning to the United States, the Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix influenced bluesman reformed and recorded with a band called Prophecy, settling in San Francisco, working clubs up and down the West Coast. Jesse then left to develop his solo act. "It was guitarist and singer Bonnie Raitt who first turned me on to the uniqueness of New Orleans," he says. "But it wasn't until a visit there in 1988 that he fell in love with the Crescent City and it's funky music." However, Jesse's scope of talents and interests reach well beyond his musical activities. He has managed to develop a successful acting career, crafting major roles in soaps and prime time network TV as well as theater productions in both America and in Europe. He is co-founder of Catskill Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit organization that rescues abused and abandoned horses and farm animals, located on 77 acres in upstate New York. "I am an independent artist. Period. I am not in this for the money," Jesse remains true to his values. "I often jokingly remark that 'there are hundreds of dollars to be made in the music business'." Jesse's songs reflect who he is at the time he writes them and fitting into the mold people may want to place him is the last thing on his mind. "My albums have no fixed style," the Hoodoo Man says. "I'll have a CD with an Al Green-style song followed by a country-influenced track, which in turn is followed by downright reggae." On "More Than Life Itself", Jesse went for a mood, a vibe, a feeling that draws one in. "I recorded the album in the old school style," he explains. "I try to take the listener on a journey. It is an album that you put on and sit through, feel, absorb." One of the tracks, the beautiful "It's Gonna Be OK" has been dubbed "the official post-Katrina survivors anthem" by WWLTV4 New Orleans. |

News from Northern Blues Music 1. New JW-Jones CD, Kissing in 29 Days, Now in Stores We are proud to announce that JW-Jones has released his fourth CD on NorthernBlues Music Kissing in 29 Days. JW’s latest CD features JW at his most swingiest and he has gotten David “Fathead” Newman as a guest on tenor sax (you might know Fathead Newman from his fame playing for Ray Charles). Here’s a five-star review from Roots Music Report: “Blues aficionados, this is the one you’ve been waiting for. The JW-Jones Blues Band knocks one out of the park with the soulful renderings on their newest CD, Kissing in 29 Days. The Band has produced three other CD’s that were very good and this one is no exception. In fact, this is one of the best Blue’s CD’s that we’ve heard in quite sometime. The band offers an extraordinary “bluesy” sound punctuated by musical mastery. The guitar pieces are nothing short of awesome and the saxophone will leave you wanting more. Combined, they create a distinctive sound uniquely Blues and uniquely artistic. The good vocals and the powerful melancholy of the lyrics come together in just the right way to remind you of what real Blues is all about. It is precisely this type of music that appeals to young and old Blues fans alike.” Brenda Barbee 2. Janiva Magness and Watermelon Slim CDs now up on Listening Posts at Borders. Both the new Janiva Magness CD, Do I Move You?, and the new Watemelon Slim & The Workers CD (self-titled) are now at Borders. Do I Move You? just got two great reviews at Blues Bytes…here’s one of them: Janiva Magness' Do I Move You? (Northern Blues) is a great CD from the woman nominated for ‘Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year’ in the 2006 Blues Music Awards, which used to be called the W.C.Handy Awards. Incidentally, this was her third nomination for these awards, and she has previously won awards such as the B.B.King Award for Musical Excellence & the Jim Croce Award for Ourstanding Achievement In Rhythm & Blues. This CD follows up Bury Him At The Crossroads, and it’s her 6th album altogether and second for NorthernBlues a record company that is rapidly becoming known for the quality of the music that it releases. Most of the tracks were recorded in Los Angeles, with just two recorded in Nashville, and there is a superb mix of music amongst the 11 tracks on the album. Guitarist/bassist Jeff Turmes wrote three of the tracks, Colin Linden (also guitar on the album) wrote one, and there are covers of tracks by Willie Dixon, Delbert McClinton and Nina Simone, amongst the others. The album opens with “I’m Just A Prisoner,” a track that Marcia Ball made a good job of on her 1997 album “Let Me Play With Your Poodle.” This version is at least as good as Ball’s, if not better! A strong, slow moving song that shows off Janiva’s voice and range superbly. Track two is probably my favourite on this CD a cover of Willie Dixon’s “Working On Me Baby.” This a good solid blues track that shows just how much Janiva understands what constitutes a good song for blues listeners. Delbert McClinton’s ballad “You Were Never Mine” follows a moody, atmospheric, song and very well executed. The title track of this CD is a Nina Simone song, and typically it’s full of emotion. It’s well presented, sung beautifully, and the backing is top notch great guitar work and some superb organ in the background adds to the whole package. This track comes a very, very close second to “Working On Me Baby” as my favourite. Even now that he’s on his fourth album (his third in three years), a MENSA member, a W.C. Handy Award nominee and he tours instead of trucks, Slim (nee Bill Homans) still has a raging case of the blues. So here he sings of hauling stuff that “smells just like the devil’s bottom hole,” chasing his paper all over town, possibly losing his baby and being neck-deep in bullshit. His is a deep, bluesy brogue that cries, cautions, yarns, jokes and worships (the blues, its fathers, God and life on “Eau De Boue”). He likewise plays his slide guitarthe amen to his wordsin front of a crack band of bluesmen who can play jump, boogie, Delta, Chicago, Texas, zydeco, anything you want. And he still has the blues. But that doesn’t mean the man is bummed out. The mark of a real bluesman is his ability, whether he’s happy or sad to make any life experience sound like the sweet spot between heaven and hell. Watermelon Slim can do that like nobody’s business and Watermelon Slim and the Workers is that real-life, real-blues sweet spot. |
