DAVIS RAINES

Jimbo Mathus and the Starlite Wranglers continue their 5-week, Wednesday night series at the Gibson Lounge with Davis Raines this Wednesday, May 16.
Raines didn’t begin his music career until his mid-30s, after he decided to leave behind his job as a captain of a maximum-security prison in Alabama, where, for a time, he was in charge of Death Row.
The music on his critically acclaimed 1998 debut, Big Shiny Cars includes hardcore tunes like “Working Homicide”, “Hell for Breakfast”, and “Last Hard Man in Elmore County”.
2003’s Parts Unknown found Raines further developing a broader cross-section of country-tinged singer-songwriter fare with a storyteller’s gift for metaphor. As a songwriter he has a cut on the GRAMMY nominated album Wave On Wave by Pat Green. The album was recently certified Gold.

Raines will join the ever-surprising cast of characters of Jimbo Mathus and the Starlite Wranglers at the Gibson Lounge this Wednesday, May 16. The Gibson Lounge is located at 145 Lt. George Lee Ave., across from the FedEx forum. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm, cover charge is $5.

Local unsung heroes of Chicago jazz and blues unite for a special Green Mill engagement for future Delmark DVD/CD!! JUNE 22, 23, 2007

ARI BROWN Quartet with very special guest, PETE COSEY (June 23rd only)

Live at the Green Mill, Friday, June 22nd and Saturday, June 23rd (Cosey only on 23rd)

Some exciting news just confirmed, Delmark’s next recording for future DVD/CD will be the Ari Brown Quartet - Kirk Brown (piano), Yosef Ben Israel (Bass), and Avreeyal Ra (drums). with Pete Cosey on guitar at the Green Mill. Special guest Pete Cosey on “electric mud” guitar will be performing with Ari Brown on Saturday the 23rd only.

ARI BROWN is a composer, arranger and educator whose principle instrument is the saxophone. He has performed with many music greats including: Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams, Lou Rawls, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Elvin Jones, Andrew White, Della Reese, Billy Eckstein. Mr. Brown has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the Chicago premier of the Anthony Davis opera, "Malcom X". He has also performed a clarinet solo on the score in Universal Studio's motion picture, The Babe . He has toured all over the world including Japan, Europe, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore. He received his BA of Music Education from Vandercook College of Music, and has made numerous recordings, including 1998’s Venus (Delmark 504) and Ari’s debut as a leader, 1996’s Ultimate Frontier . (Delmark 486) - from AACM website

Ari Brown is one of the busiest and most versatile musicians in Chicago though his highest profile gigs have often involved working or recording as sideman to Lester Bowie, Elvin Jones, Anthony Braxton, and Kahil El’ Zabar’s Ritual Trio to name a few. Ari blends two traditions; the Chicago tough tenor and the AACM. He melds them into one voice. And no matter how far out he takes the music it still remains accessible and enjoyable. In the Chicago Reader Neil Tesser described Ari's debut album, Ultimate Frontier (Delmark 486), as a "flavorful tour de force sustained by a soulful spirituality". Venus maintains that spirituality but also showcases Ari's live performance feel.

PETE COSEY is an underground legend of the electric guitar, best known to blues fans as one of the in house Chess Records guitarists in the late 60’s and early 70s’s psychedelic era (Muddy Waters’ Elecric Mud and Howlin Wolf’s ‘69 “psych album”, and to jazz fans as the wild guitarist with Miles Davis in the mid 70’s on Dark Magus, Agharta, and Pangaea.

“Cosey’s searing, wah-wahing psychedelic leads sound like the bastard spawn of Funkadelic’s Eddie Hazel and free-jazz string mangler Sonny Sharrock.  A partial list of the blues, soul, rock, and jazz heavies he played with includes Chuck Berry, Billy Stewart, Fontella Bass, the Soul Stirrers, Jerry Butler, the Dells, Etta James, and the Rotary Connection. He can be heard on popular recordings by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Herbie Hancock. He helped found both the Pharaohs and Earth, Wind and Fire and was an early member of the AACM, playing in a trio with organist Amina Claudine Myers and drummer Ajaramu and in Group For, a quartet with saxophonist Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre and Art Ensemble of Chicago drummer and bassist Don Moye and Malachi Favors. He spent several years as the guitarist in the Gene Ammons Trio, and was a longtime member of Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. At one point, he was jobbing in Chess Records' house band by day and jamming with Muhal Richard Abrams's Experimental Big Band by night.” - from Chicago Reader’s Peter Margasak

KEVIN MARK news

Kevin Mark is proud to announce the release of his new album "Cuttin’ Loose".

“Cuttin’ Loose” showcases 14 tunes that’ll take you on a ride from the West Coast out to Chicago – with a pit stop in New Orleans – all while maintaining Kevin’s unique sound and songwriting approach (11 or the 14 tracks are brand new originals) that has won this guitarist/vocalist/songwriter numerous blues awards and nominations.

Recorded at Hideaway Studios in Montreal, Canada, “Cuttin’ Loose” features long-time rhythm section of bassist Costa Zafiropoulos and shuffle king Rob “Big Daddy” Marcheterre on drums – and sees the return of a three-piece saxophone section on most of the cuts – including Red Gauthier (tenor), Mat Mousseau (baritone) and Kevin Mark Blues Band alumni Little Frankie Thiffault (tenor), who also helped with the horn arrangements. Three tracks get a full 5-piece horn section treatment, helped out by Rachel Therrien on trumpet and Etienne Lebel on trombone.

Also making a return for “Cuttin’ Loose” is keyboard great Michael Fonfara, currently with the Downchild Blues Band. He laid down some mean B3 organ as well as some groovin’ piano lines.

Quebec blues singer Tina Dee rounds off the guest list by lending her vintage-flavored vocals to the Kevin Mark original “If Your Phone Don’t Ring” – which probably includes one of the most humorous quotes on the CD; “If your phone don’t ring, boy you’ll know it’s me”. Great stuff!

To top it off, the CD was mixed out in California by West-Coast blues engineer Jerry Hall who has worked with Little Charlie & The Nightcats, James Harman, Junior Watson, Kid Ramos – to name but a few.

From start to finish, the CD is exceptionally strong. The tunes fly by and once those last few notes fade off, the listener is left wanting more. Most of the songs fall into that “classic radio” length of under three minutes – which is a nice change for a blues album. Kevin’s influences do peek in occasionally (and exceptionally so on the instrumental tribute to Albert King, appropriately titled “King Albert”), but this album is far from being a copycat of any exact artist or style – and refreshingly so.

This is simply good ‘ole horn-driven blues that will make you want to move them hips!

Blues harmonica master Carey Bell died on May 6, 2007 of heart failure in his hometown of Chicago, IL. He was 70. Bell the 1998 winner of the Blues Music Award for Traditional Male Artist Of The Year was a veteran of both Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon's bands as well as an award-winning solo artist, and a guest artist on countless blues recordings. Bell's classic, funky and deeply soulful blues place him firmly on the short list of blues harmonica superstars.

Bell was one of the very few harmonica players who didn't learn his craft by listening to old records, but by studying directly under his teachers Big Walter Horton, Little Walter Jacobs and Sonny Boy Williamson II. It didn't take long for Bell to develop his signature "chopped" harmonica phrasing and deep-blues style.

Carey Bell Harrington was born in Macon, Mississippi on November 14, 1936.
A fan of Louis Jordan, Bell originally wanted a saxophone, but economic realities forced his grandfather to buy him a harmonica instead. He taught himself to play by the time he was eight, and began playing professionally with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee, when he was 13. In 1956, Lee convinced Carey that Chicago was the place to be for aspiring bluesmen, and on September 12, 1956 they arrived. Almost immediately, Bell went to see Little Walter perform at the Club Zanzibar at 14th and Ashland. The two became friends and Walter delighted in showing the youngster some of his tricks. Carey went on to meet and learn from Sonny Boy Williamson II, but it was Big Walter Horton who really inspired him and became his mentor.

Carey learned his lessons well but by the late 1950s and early 1960s the gigs were drying up for harp players as the electric guitar began to take over as the predominant instrument of Chicago blues. Bell decided to increase his worth by becoming a bass player (learning the ropes from Hound Dog Taylor). He quickly mastered the instrument and began getting gigs as a bassist with Honeyboy Edwards, Johnny Young, Eddie Taylor, Earl Hooker and Big Walter. While playing bass in Big Walter's band, Bell studied every harp trick in the book first-hand from one of the all-time great harmonica players.

Bell, back on harp full-time, recorded behind Earl Hooker in 1968 for Arhoolie. By 1969 Bell was fronting his own band. His friend, harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite brought him over to Bob Koester at Delmark Records in 1969, who promptly signed Bell and recorded CAREY BELL'S BLUES HARP. Bell spent 1971 traveling and recording with Muddy Waters (he can be heard on Muddy's THE LONDON SESSIONS and UNK IN FUNK albums on Chess). Willie Dixon chose Bell for the featured role in his Chicago Blues All-Stars, with whom Bell worked regularly throughout the 1970s, both touring and recording.

Even though Dixon kept Carey busy, Bell still found time for his own projects. In 1972 he teamed up with his friend Big Walter and recorded what was to be Alligator Records second-ever release, BIG WALTER HORTON WITH CAREY BELL. In 1973 he made a solo album, LAST NIGHT, for ABC Bluesway and was featured in 1978 on Alligator's Grammy-nominated LIVING CHICAGO BLUES series (both with his own band and playing behind Lovie Lee).

By the 1980s Bell had established himself worldwide as a giant among blues harmonica players. He recorded albums as a leader and as a sideman for a variety of labels both in the United States and Europe, and was constantly playing live. In 1990 Bell, along with fellow harpslingers Junior Wells, James Cotton and Billy Branch, got together and recorded the Blues Music Award-winning Alligator album, HARP ATTACK!.

In 1995, Bell's very first full-length solo album on Alligator, DEEP DOWN, secured his reputation as a modern blues legend. His follow-ups, 1997's GOOD LUCK MAN (which received a Blues Music Award for Traditional Album of the Year), and 2004's SECOND NATURE (an acoustic album recorded with his guitarist/vocalist son Lurrie Bell), pushed the blues farther out with Bell's rich vocabulary of deep grooves and contemporary sounds. Most recently, in 2007, Delmark Records released GETTIN' UP LIVE, a CD/DVD featuring Bell once again performing with his son Lurrie.

Bell fathered 15 children and is survived by 10.

The Holmes Bros. - Roadhouse Meets Gospel
WED. 05.09.2007 · 09:00PM · $20
The spine-tingling harmonies, boundless energy and telepathic musicianship of The Holmes Brothers mixes Saturday night's roadhouse rock with the gospel fervor and harmonies of Sunday's church service. USA Today calls The Holmes Brothers' vision of American roots music "masterful and convincing." Entertainment Weekly says, "The Holmes Brothers are juke-joint vets with a brazenly borderless view of American music."

Genre-Bending Songcrafter Paul Thorn
THU. 05.10.2007 · 09:00PM · $28
Mark Knopfler says, "Paul Thorn is a rare and addictive mixture of soul, wit, humor and musicality." Kris Kristofferson calls his songs, "absolutely Southern, absolutely original, full of heart and humor and surprises and street-wise details..." Nashville Beat wrote, "A sense of humor, a storyteller's heart and a broad musical sensibility betraying his youth, this fella's genre-bending country/rock/blues is the most accessible music to come along in ages..." Robert Earl Keen says, "To me he's a great performer. I love his stage thing. It's just cool, he's personal, friendly. You just feel comfortable around him."

Gritty Louisiana Roots-Rocker Kevin Gordon
FRI. 05.11.2007 · 09:30PM · $12
Kevin Gordon performs 'true-to-life storytelling conveyed through primal, satisfying grooves" writes Performing Songwriter. Entertainment Weekly says, "Writing with the poetry and economy of Dave Alvin and Lucinda Williams... the Louisiana roots-rocker returns with more gritty portraits of the down-and-out who can't go home again. He evokes the scorching guitar intensity of Springsteen, an obvious influence on his songs of drunks, highway shootings, and the rusted rails of abandoned towns." Keith Richards so eloquently calls him "f**king bloody William Shakespeare..."

Gypsy Jazz with The John Jorgenson Quintet - ONLY FLORIDA SHOW!
SAT. 05.12.2007 · 09:30PM · $32
Guitarist John Jorgenson was a founding member of the Desert Rose Band (with Chris Hillman), The Hellecasters and six-year member of Elton John's band. Although Jorgenson is well-renowned in the pop, country and rock world, gypsy jazz is the style of music closest to his heart. Because of his international reputation as a gypsy jazz player, he was twice asked to recreate Django Reinhardt's music for feature films, Gattica and Head in The Clouds. Randy McAllister's "Temporary Fixes" Re-released By Popular Demand

Dallas TX - 05-07-07 Freedom First Records announces the re-release of Randy McAllister's 4th album "Temporary Fixes" May 7th 2007. The original release, in 2000, was limited. Renewed interest in Randy McAllister's overall catalog and new digital distribution opportunities make it possible for Freedom First Records to re-release the CD "Temporary Fixes" for national distribution starting May 7th 2007 through Amazon.com, EBay.com, CDBaby.com, ArtistCDsDirect.com and other online sites.

Link to "Temporary Fixes" Release Page
http://www.randymcallister.com/release.shtml

This current re-release of the original 2000 "Temporary Fixes" was initiated by fan requests and unprecedented financial support. The album includes some of Randy McAllister's most exciting compositions and performances. "The Chain","Nobody Can Help You","Never Has A Lot of Faith","That Chicken You're Fixin","Suzi Golddigger & Sweet Betty","Game Of Life","Stronger Vice/Better Hobby","Take Me Out Of New Orleans","Man Who Went For Cigarettes","Equalizer" and "The Way" represent an important piece of Randy McAllister's body of work.

Randy explains, "I felt 'Temporary Fixes' never was really released. This time we have the inventory and with new developments in online distribution, indie labels can produce and distribute a great product. While still underdogs, we can at least get heard by our fans. They know what they like."

Randy McAllister's releases have always received critical acclaim from industry leading media. He works hard to earn his fans with every live performance. As songwriter and performer Randy has always set the mark high.

Randy is currently nominated in three International Categories for Australia's 2007 BlueStar Awards along with names like Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. Voting is currently taking place. Randy developed a distinctive, soulful voice and is an accomplished Harmonica, drumer and songwriter. Randy is always writing. He has a prolific catalog with 7 albums to date and another album to be released this summer. With just a portion of his available catalog recorded you never know what a live performance may deliver. Able to perform back to back concerts for days without repeating a single song, Randy McAllister is truly one of the most prolific singer songwriters performing. Known for his impressive range and command of styles, Randy is able to cross and blend genre for an exciting mix of performances the always reach audiences to create fans.

McAllister is a fifth generation native Texan. His father also a musician, introduced Randy to live music at an early age teaching his son to play the drums. Randy's father played in bands for years. Randy excelled at the drums, a natural. He developed musically as he found writing, composition and arranging.

THE SUBTONES (A)
Freitag, 11.

IMPERIAL CROWNS (USA)
Donnerstag, 17. Mai 2007, 20.30 Uhr!

Crown & Glory“… back at Bluesiana, the hottest Live Music Spot !!!!

LOST COMPADRES (A)
Samstag, 26. Mai 2007, 21.00 Uhr!
Americana/Alternative Country
