May 7, 2007 >>>>> Blues Harmonica Master Carey Bell Passes Born in Macon, Mississippi in 1936, Carey Bell learned harmonica at early age. He would move to Chicago to stay with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee. While in Chicago, he befriended both Little Walter and Big Walter Horton who became major influences in his style. He worked in the bands of Johnny Young, Honeyboy Edwards, Earl Hooker, Willie Dixon, and Muddy Waters early on in his Chicago career. Carey's 1969 debut album, Blues Harp on Delmark Records showed him to be a brilliant singer and harmonica player with a unique mastery of the chromatic harmonica. This album elevated Carey beyond sideman status to that of a band leader, Three years later he was featured on the Alligator release Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell, which cemented his stature as one of the windy city's top harmonica men. Carey would go on to record albums on other labels such as JSP, Blind Pig, ABC Bluesway, and Rooster Blues. He also made great recordings as a cherished sideman with the greatest of Chicago Blues artists including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Eddie Clearwater, Eddie Taylor, Sunnyland Slim, Louisiana Red, Earl Hooker, Robert Nighthawk, Eddie C. Campbell, W.W. Williams, Little Mack Simmons, Big Walter Horton, Lovie Lee, Johnny Littlejohn, Bob Margolin, Jimmy Rogers, Bob Riedy, Buster Benton, and others. Carey also was a part of historic gathering called Harp Attack on Alligator Records, which put Carey together with fellow Chicago blues harp masters Junior Wells, James Cotton, and Billy Branch. Carey and his son Lurrie had just released a magnificent CD and DVD on Delmark Records called Gettin' Up, which will stand as the final work of his brilliant career. We will miss Carey Bell and the great joy that his warm personality and his live performances gave us. His legacy is secure as a master of Chicago blues and his stunning recordings will live on forever as definitive works. Funeral information shall be forthcoming. |

Randy McAllister Nominated in Three Categories for Australia's BlueStar Awards
Dallas, Texas - 4-30-07 - Singer/Songwriter, Randy McAllister has been nominated for three categories in Australia's BlueStar Music Awards (http://www.bluestarawards.com/nom_win.htm). Randy received nominations for "Best Instrumentalist Harmonica", "Best International Vocal - Male" along with Buddy Guy, Ike Turner and Tom Waits, and "Best International Solo Artist" where he joined Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. Long considered one of the top Singer/Songwritiers in the US by critics and media, Big City Blues called Randy, "One of the World's...Top Blues Artists". Baltimore Bluesrag said "Absolutely Stunning!". The Bluestar nominations are even more meaningful because they represent the votes of fans in Australia. Australia's BlueStar Awards and nominations are based on fan votes. Voting is restricted to residents of Australia. "Never having traveled to Australia, I am sure Randy would love the opportunity." According to Manager Chris Ownbey, "We certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility." Randy's recent 16-track release of "Flying High While Staying Low Down" has been critically acclaimed worldwide with accolades by top Blues, Roots, Americana publications. It seems fans down under are spinning and loving his latest release. It is getting increasing air-play at home in the US, but apparently doing even better in Australia where there are fewer genre restrictions on what gets played. Clearly Australian fans are hearing a world class sound they like. Randy has released 7 albums in the last 9 years with an 8th on the way in June. His up- Randy McAllister is one of the premier singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist to emerge from Texas. Heartbreak, humor, high hair and tall Texas tales all play a part in the song writing of Randy McAllister. His music has been hailed as some of the most original and innovative being made today. While comparison's are not easy, it has been said that his music is a cross between Doug Sahm, John Hiatt and Delbert McClinton, with a blues man's background and sensibilities thrown into the mix. Raised in the small Texas town of Novice, McAllister is a fifth-generation Texan, whose father was both a fireman and musician. His father was a drummer in a band called "The Flames". At a very young age, Randy followed in his fathers foots steps. He began to take up drumming, but the drums were just the beginning for Randy, as he began to develop as a singer and songwriter. McAllister has released 7 critically praised albums beginning with his debut "Diggin' for Sofa Change", followed by "Grease, Grit, Dirt and Spit", the much heralded "Double Rectified Bust Head", 2002 GRAMMY NOMINEE "Givers and Takers", "Temporary Fixes" and A "Little Left of Center" all built on a firm foundation that is his songwriting. His much anticipated Compilation CD, "Flying High While Staying Low Down" was released in late 2006. Artist Site: http://www.RandyMcAllister.com |
