Eine Kombination von Gitarre, Violine, Akkordeon und Gesang weckt im ersten Moment hier zu Lande Gedanken an ein musikalisches Experiment, ist jedoch in Europa häufiger anzutreffen als man glauben mag, geschweige denn, in den USA. |

Das Trio Mally, Paier und Mallinger bot an diesem Abend (02. Mai 2007) zwei herrliche Sets mit überaus ansprechender und eigentlich wie gewohnt guter Musik. Mit einem sehr weiten Bogen von Tradition mit Einfallsreichtum, textlicher Vielfalt an Geschichten bis hin zu perfekten Improvisationen mit grenzüberschreitenden Rhythmen, wobei der emotionale Boden der Bluesmusik und des gehobenen "Liedes" eigentlich nie verlassen wurde. Die auf der CD enthaltenen Tondokumente wurden um einiges länger in der "live" Show geboten, denn die Improvisationsfreude steigerte sich bei allen drei Musikern von einem Song zum anderen. Das Publikum, nicht allzuviele haben sich zu diesem Klangereignis eingefunden, die Anwesenden jedoch waren echte Zuhörer und voll begeistert bis zur letzten erklungenen Note. |

Oliver Mally, "der" österreichische (Blues)-Gitarrist und Sänger, verschmolz die einzelnen Songs und Lieder zu einem homogenen Klangkörper, mal melancholisch, mal mit scharfer Stimme dominierte er jeden Song zum dynamischen Höhepunkt. Hiebei müssen die Stücke "Love Hurts", "Your Lullaby" und "Billy" erwähnt werden. Viel Freude kam bei uns auf, als er seine Blues Songs ( z.B. "Sugar coated Love") erklingen ließ, natürlich kam dabei auch das Publikum in Fahrt und belohnte mit gebührendem Applaus. |

Klaus Paier, bot einen dichten Sound am Akkordeon und seine Improvisationen waren sehr oft der brillante Ausgangspunkt für Bernie Mallinger an der Violine und die schwingenden Linien verbreiteten sich teils zu einem expressiven Schrei mit darauffolgendem rauhen Vibrieren. Total emotional und mit Feingefühl ließ er auch seine Violine mit Effekt-Geräten richtig "sprechen", einfach einmalig. |

Dieses Konzert ist dank seines kreativen Reichtums, der Virtuosität und der Sensibilität des Trios Mally, Paier und Mallinger ein unvergessliches musikalisches Erlebnis geworden. Eine herrliche Zugabe der Musiker war die Folge und leider auch die Tatsache, dass dieser schöne Abend zu Ende war. In der Hoffnung, dass es etwas Gleichartiges mit diesen heimischen Künstlern in naher Zukunft im Birdland stattfindet freue ich mich schon, ----- Fritz Svacina |

Believe it or not, but a musically experimental combination of guitar, accordion, violin and voice is more likely to be encountered in this country than in America. ‘Birdland’, the only Viennese club with that ‘New York flair’ was the setting for such a musical happening with a live presentation of the Sidesteps CD ‘Steppin’ Out’ (“Sir” Oliver Mally/ Klaus Paier/ Bernie Mallinger). |

On the evening of 2nd May 2007 the trio of Mally, Paier and Mallinger offered the audience two excellent sets of extremely entertaining music that was just as good as expected. With a very wide range of tradition and innovation, a variety of lyrical subjects and nigh-on perfect improvisations over category defying rhythms, the emotional basis of the blues and more sophisticated songs was most certainly respected. The numbers from the CD were stretched out more in concert as the musicians’ joy in their improvisations increased from song to song. Although not too many members of the public turned up for this event, all of those who made the effort were real fans who fully enjoyed the music from the first note to the last. Austrian blues singer and guitarist Oliver Mally fused the disparate songs and pieces into one coherent whole – sometimes melancholic, sometimes dominating the song with his piercing voice, and among the many highpoints deserving of mention were ‘Love Hurts’, ‘Your Lullabye’ and ‘Billy’. We were overjoyed that he aired blues numbers such as ‘Sugar Coated Love’ and he swept the audience up along with him, as they gave him much deserved applause.  Klaus Paier presented some bright sounding accordion and his improvisations were often the wonderful jumping off point for the violin of Bernie Mallinger, whose swinging licks climaxed in a soulful cry or a raw vibrato. He allowed his effects laden violin to communicate a range of emotions in a totally unique fashion.Thanks to the creative richness, virtuoso musicianship, and sensitivity of the trio, this concert was an unforgettable musical experience. A wonderful encore was the result – unfortunately it also signalled the end of this excellent evening.
